If you’ve been trying to find the ultimate beauty products for your skin, you could be looking for skincare love in all the wrong places. If you’ve been struggling with acne, are looking for a real anti-aging regimen or just want a brighter, clearer complexion you need to drop the generic, drug-store products and walk away.
What All Generic Skincare Products Have
You’re constantly being sold by beauty products. “New and improved!” or “Blemish-free technology”, “Overnight skin solution.” In commercials and on the shelves, the majority of beauty products are pushing the idea that they’ve got something the other guys don’t. But if you turn over the brightly-colored bottle and look at the ingredients, you’ll see the ingredients are all relatively the same. Some of the most common ingredients are:
Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs)
Alpha-hydroxy acids, including glycolic, lactic, tartaric, and citric acids, are found in many products that claim to smooth fine lines, irregular pigmentation and age spots. It can also help to shrink enlarged pores.
Beta-hydroxy acid (AKA salicylic acid)
You’re probably familiar with salicylic acid if your skin is acne-prone. The benefit of this ingredient is it removes dead skin and can improve the texture and color of sun-damaged skin.
Retinol
Retinol is a well-known ingredient found in most “anti-aging” products. Its derived from vitamin A and can be found in many over-the-counter products, though in low dosages.
L-Ascorbic Acid
This is a form of vitamin C in many skin care products. Many brands market vitamin C in their products through different substances, however, L-ascorbic acid is the only useful form of vitamin C in skin care products. It stimulates collagen creation and minimizes fine lines, scars, and wrinkles.
Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic acid is often found in products boasting Vitamin C derivatives because it helps the skin to absorb it. Our bodies create hyaluronic acid naturally for different reasons, often as a lubricant. In beauty products, it’s often used to combat wrinkles. Over time, your diet, activities, and toxins can severely diminish the production of hyaluronic acid.
