For many teens, acne is not only an annoying reality but an embarrassing one. It causes them to feel awkward and self-conscious. As a result, they skip trying out for their favorite sports and participating in school activities.
Acne develops due to an interplay of multiple factors, which include bacteria, inflammation, excess oil production (due to overactive sebaceous glands), fluctuating hormone levels, genetics, high humidity, and stress.
These factors may make you think your teen’s acne is not completely within their control. While that is true to some extent, there are things that they can do to keep their skin acne-free. Show your teen how by sharing the skincare tips we’ve provided below.
o Keep the face clean.
Keeping the face clean is an essential component of any good skincare routine. Advise your teen to wash their face no more than twice a day with warm water and mild soap. Make sure not to scrub; just gently massage the face in circular motions. Washing the face too often and scrubbing can cause skin irritation.
o Get enough sleep.
In order for your teen to maintain acne-free skin, they need to establish good sleep hygiene. Studies show that sleep deprivation can unsettle the skin’s pH balance. Your skin’s pH (which stands for potential hydrogen) acts as a protective barrier: it inhibits bacterial growth, maintains the optimal acid environment in which the skin’s natural flora can thrive, and ultimately wards off acne.
o Eat a low-glycemic diet.
For people wanting to keep their skin acne-free, experts recommend having a low-glycemic diet, which can eliminate spikes in blood sugar levels. High blood sugar levels can cause the body to trigger an immune response and, consequently, inflammation.
Eat more vegetables, fruits, and whole grains, but limit consumption of dairy products. There is scientific evidence that links dairy to acne breakouts. Switching to almond milk, soy milk, or oat milk may help prevent acne.
o Choose non-comedogenic makeup and skincare products.
Avoid comedogenic products, which can clog the pores. Before buying makeup and skincare products for your teen, do some research and read the labels. Lanolin, avocado butter, and soybean oil are some of the common comedogenic ingredients.
o See a dermatologist.
There is no substitute for taking your teen to a dermatologist, who can give them expert advice and recommend supplements and skincare products that not only help fight acne but also keep their skin healthy and radiant-looking.
