Rashes
Rashes can cause pain, swelling, blisters and ulcers when left untreated. Rashes may be caused by any number of things including:
- Allergic reactions
- Plants, animals, insects
- Infection
- Medications
- Irritation (from man-made or natural ingredients)
Since so many things can cause rashes, and so many rashes look alike and cause similar symptoms, it’s important to be examined by a dermatologist.
Dry Skin
Dry skin affects patients of all ages and may be caused by a number of factors including aging, sun exposure, and frequent handwashing, which is particularly common among families with young children. Left untreated, dry skin can become irritated and may crack or peel, so moisturizers are the first line of defense.
Use of chemicals and hand sanitizers can lead to dry, irritated skin. Everybody has their own unique skin type, and a dermatologist can find the right moisturizer or treatment for your dry, irritated skin.
Acne
Acne, by far the most common chronic skin condition in the US, affects over 50 million Americans each year. Acne is characterized by blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, and lumps (nodules or cysts) on the skin. While most acne occurs on the face, it is also commonly found on the chest, shoulders, back and buttocks. While acne can occur at any age, it generally begins in puberty, and many adults still experience acne through and beyond middle age. Adult acne is often triggered or worsened by hormones, stress, medications, hormones, and diet.
The Children’s Skin Center’s board-certified dermatologists and certified physician assistants understand the pain and frustration that come along with acne. Our treatments include:
- Patient Education
- Glycolic peels
- Microdermabrasion
- Beta lift peels
- Fraxel laser treatments to reduce acne scarring
- Acne surgery
- Intralesional corticosteroid treatment for acne cysts
There’s no need to suffer with acne any longer! Today’s treatments are more affordable and convenient than ever, and patient education and early treatment can help to prevent scars, and give patients a whole new outlook on life.
Vitiligo
Vitiligo is a skin condition in which white patches may appear on any part of the body including the face, lips, hands, arms, and legs. White patches occur when affected skin cells fail to produce melanin, which leads to loss of pigmentation and gives the skin a lighter or milky white appearance. Most patients with vitiligo are otherwise in good health.
Vitiligo affects approximately 1 in 50 people. While the exact cause is unknown, vitiligo may be an autoimmune response, as it has been found to occur with other autoimmune conditions, including thyroid disease. Around 20% of those with vitiligo have a family member with vitiligo, which suggests that heredity may play a role. Vitiligo affects every patient differently, and it may go through any number of cycles in which a period of pigment loss is followed by a period in which there is no change. There is no way to predict or control the progression of the condition.
Due to the increased risk of sunburn (vitiligo patches are very easily sunburned), patients are advised to minimize sun exposure and wear protective clothing as much as possible. Avoiding the sun will also minimize the appearance of vitiligo, as tanning unaffected skin makes the vitiligo more noticeable.
Our board-certified dermatologists and pediatric dermatology practitioners educate patients about various ways to minimize the appearance of vitiligo, including:
- Makeup
- Self-tanning creams
- Medications and topical applications
- Narrowband UVB Light Treatment
- Phototherapy
- Excimer laser treatments
Our board-certified dermatologists and certified physician assistants have advanced training in both dermatology and pediatric dermatology, so you can rest assured that your whole family, from the youngest to the oldest and everyone in between, will receive the best care and treatments available at The Children’s Skin Center.
We offer a wide range of state-of-the-art treatments for a number of common conditions, including:
