“Eczema” refers to a group of skin conditions which doctors often call “the itch that rashes,” because itching is often the first symptom, before a rash even appears. When the rash appears, it may be red and bumpy, and feel like it is burning.

It is important to see a dermatologist if you suspect eczema, to ensure that it’s treated properly and to ease symptoms, especially in children, as scratching can exacerbate the problem quickly. Scratching can cause increased pain and swelling, scaling, cracking, weeping of clear fluid, infection, and skin damage. The more severe the symptoms, the more likely patients are to be embarrassed or frustrated by their disease, and young patients may also experience disrupted sleep or bullying related to their disease.

According to the National Eczema Association, approximately 10% of Americans have some form of eczema, and approximately 13% of children under 18 have atopic dermatitis, the most common form of eczema.

Atopic Dermatitis

Atopic dermatitis often runs in families and may be accompanied by other allergic conditions such as hay fever and asthma, is thought to be caused by an immune system response in which inflammation causes the skin to become red, dry, and extremely itchy.

When an infant develops atopic dermatitis, it may be called infantile eczema. Red, itchy patches are most frequently found on the cheeks or around the mouth, but they may also appear on the scalp or forehead. Infants who develop atopic dermatitis tend to get better, and may completely heal, over time.
