Birthmarks
What is a Birthmark?
Birthmarks are spots on the skin which may be visible at birth or soon after, and birthmarks may develop at any time during a person’s lifetime.
Many people have moles, a common type of pigmented birthmark which is generally small and round. Moles may be skin-colored, brown, or black. While these birthmarks are often harmless and some may be relatively small, it is always advisable to have a pediatrician or physician evaluate birthmarks, as they may indicate the presence of another condition, or they may require treatment. Even when birthmarks have been determined to be harmless, patients and parents should remain vigilant, and have birthmarks reevaluated should they change in size, shape, or color.
Pediatricians often send their patients to the Children’s Skin Center, South Florida’s premier pediatric dermatology practices, because we specialize in treating vascular birthmarks and tumors, hemangiomas, and port wine stains, under the direction of Ana M. Duarte, MD, The Vascular Birthmarks Foundation’s 2016 Physician of the Year. Dr. Duarte also serves as the Director of Dermatology at Nicklaus Children's Hospital and at The International Birthmark Institute.
Our board-certified dermatologists and certified physician assistants have advanced training in both dermatology and pediatric dermatology, and we have created a practice that feels welcoming, inclusive and kid-friendly.
